Teaching Context Clues Types: Middle School

As middle school English teachers, we all know the importance of teaching our students about types of context clues. Context clues types are essential for understanding and interpreting a wide range of texts, from fiction to nonfiction. However, teaching context clues can be challenging, and it can be challenging to find engaging and purposeful ways to introduce or review the topic. That’s where this lesson comes in!

The Context Clues Types Lesson

The context clues lesson is an editable PowerPoint lesson that includes seven slides that review different types of context clues. The lesson uses student-friendly language and is designed to be engaging and interactive. You can use the slides to introduce context clues to your students or as a review before an assessment.

The Create the Clue Activity

After going over the lesson, it’s time for your students to practice identifying context clues. The Create the Clue Activity is a fun and interactive activity that will help your students apply what they have learned. The activity includes instructions for both in-person and distance learning. You can use the digital Google Slides version or the printable version of the activity.

The activity is simple but effective. Your students will be given topics, and they create clues to give to their partner so their partner can determine their answer. Students have to think outside of the box to determine the clues.

Context Clues Notes

To help your students solidify their understanding of context clues, the lesson includes a one-page doodle note handout. The doodle notes are perfect for visual learners and includes blank spaces for students to fill in as you cover the information on the handouts. The worksheets also includes a fill-in-the-blank guided notes version for students who have difficulty with note-taking and a coloring page version that students can color or doodle while you go over the lesson.

The handout comes with a teacher answer key that accompanies the fill-in-the-blank version and a digital fill-in-the-blank guided notes version. The digital version is in Google Slides with text boxes added in. Students type and fill in the information, but they cannot color or interact with the pages like they would in print.
