Phrases and clauses are the building blocks of sentences. A phrase is a group of words working together without a subject-verb pair, like “under the table,” while a clause has both, like “she danced gracefully.” These elements shape how we communicate and write clearly.
Most teachers approach phrases and clauses with the usual suspects: worksheets, direct instruction, and maybe a few sentence diagramming activities. Sound familiar? Me too!!! I used to stick to those same strategies, and honestly, I was fine with it. That is until I created doodle notes.
That’s when everything changed. These notes transformed how I approached teaching phrases and clauses. This resource became the blueprint for my lessons, giving me an easy, engaging, and structured way to teach grammar concepts my students could actually understand and apply.
Doodle Notes with Phrases and Clauses
What makes doodle notes so effective? They combine creativity with structure, offering students a way to visually and interactively process information. Imagine teaching the difference between a phrase and a clause, a concept that can often feel dry or confusing. With traditional methods, you might provide a definition and a few example sentences. However, with doodle notes, students can engage with the concept on a whole new level.
Phrases:
For instance, when introducing a phrase like “under the table,” doodle notes might feature a visual of a table with space for students to jot down the definition of a phrase underneath. They could then add examples of their own, perhaps drawing little sketches or icons to represent different types of phrases, like prepositional or noun phrases.
Clauses:
For clauses, a similar page might show a simple sentence like “The dog barked loudly,” with arrows pointing to the subject and verb. Students could then interact with the example by identifying the subject-verb pair and distinguishing it from phrases by highlighting or underlining parts of the sentence.
This hands-on, visual approach transforms abstract grammar rules into something tangible and memorable. By engaging multiple senses visual, kinesthetic, and even artistic! Students are better able to grasp the function of phrases and clauses and understand how to use them in their own writing.
Here’s how these doodle notes specifically work with phrases and clauses:
- They highlight key definitions and examples, so students can see how phrases and clauses work in real sentences.
- They encourage active participation, like coloring, underlining, or adding sketches, which solidifies understanding.
